Dhimmah Support
Dhimmah helps you meet the dawn prayer: it gives you prayer times and the qibla for your city, and grows a garden that keeps one honest record of the fajrs you have prayed. There are no accounts to create, no ads, and no tracking.
Contact us
Write to us in English or Arabic. We read every message and usually reply within two days. If you are writing about a problem, telling us your phone model and whether you are on iOS or Android helps us answer in one round instead of three.
Your recovery code
Dhimmah does not ask for an email address or a password, so a recovery code is the only key to your garden. It is sixteen letters and digits in four groups (older accounts have five words and six digits — those still work), and you will find it under Settings → Account → show recovery code. Write it down somewhere you will still have it if you lose your phone.
- To move to a new phone: install Dhimmah, then on the Account page choose "I have a recovery code" and enter it. Your streak, garden, and prayer history come back.
- If you have lost the code and still have the app installed, open Settings → Account and read it now — it is shown there whenever the app is signed in.
- If you have lost the code and no longer have the app, the account cannot be recovered. Because the code is the only secret and we never hold a copy, there is nothing on our side to reset. Write to us and we will help you start again.
Deleting your account
You can delete your account and everything on it from inside the app, under Settings → Account. If you no longer have the app installed, use the account-deletion page and your recovery code.
Deletion is permanent: your garden, streak, and prayer history are removed and the recovery code stops working.
Prayer times and calculation methods
Prayer times are computed on your phone from your city's coordinates, so they work with no network. If your times look a few minutes off from your local mosque, the calculation method is almost always the reason: mosques differ on the sun's angle below the horizon at fajr and isha. Change it under Settings → Calculation method.
Dhimmah offers nine methods, and picks one for you from your country when you first set your city:
- Muslim World League — fajr 18°, isha 17°. The common international default.
- Islamic Society of North America — fajr 15°, isha 15°.
- Umm al-Qura, Makkah — fajr 18.5°, isha 90 minutes after maghrib.
- Egyptian General Authority of Survey — fajr 19.5°, isha 17.5°.
- University of Islamic Sciences, Karachi — fajr 18°, isha 18°.
- Institute of Geophysics, University of Tehran — fajr 17.7°, isha 14°.
- Moon Sighting Committee — fajr 18°, isha 18°, with seasonal adjustment.
- Diyanet, Turkey — fajr 18°, isha 17°.
- Singapore — fajr 20°, isha 18°.
If the times are wrong by an hour or more, your city is probably wrong rather than your method. Set it under Settings → Location, where you can search for a city or postal code by hand; Dhimmah never needs GPS permission to work.
Notifications and the adhan
Dhimmah works without notifications — nothing in the app is locked behind them — but the fajr wake is the reason most people install it. If a prayer arrives and your phone stays quiet, work down this list.
- Check the bell on the Times tab. Each prayer has its own setting and cycles off → vibrate → adhan. A prayer set to vibrate is working correctly when it buzzes without sound.
- On Samsung and some other Android phones, Notification volume is a separate slider from Media volume. If it sits at zero the adhan plays silently while the preview button in Settings still works. Raise it under the phone's Settings → Sounds and vibration → Volume.
- Check that notifications are allowed for Dhimmah in the phone's own settings, and that Do Not Disturb or a sleep-focus schedule is not covering the hour before dawn.
- On Android, battery optimisation can delay or drop an alarm. Exempting Dhimmah from battery optimisation, and leaving it out of any "deep sleeping apps" list, is what keeps the fajr wake on time.
- On iPhone, a notification sound is limited to thirty seconds by the system. The fajr alert therefore carries a shortened adhan; opening the app plays the whole call.
- You can choose the muezzin, or record your own adhan, under Settings → Adhan.
